Series-Counter Flow Retrofit

Replace and increase capacity of existing chiller plant

symphony towers.jpg

Existing plant consisted of two 550-ton chillers piped in parallel, with chilled water flow maxed for the existing piping network and no available electrical capacity. The new larger system would need to be designed at the same chilled water flow and be much more efficient in order to match existing electrical service.

This was achieved with the design of two 700-ton magnetic bearing chillers pipe in a series-counter flow configuration. The plant regularly operates at 20+ chilled water delta T and is saving Irvine Company over 1 million KwH per year.
